Showlight Speakers Class of 2025 – Video Releases Pt4
As Showlight continues to spread its magic, more of its Speaker Presentations are released this month with offerings from architectural lighting designer, Marco Miglioli and opera, dance and theatre lighting designer, Christina Thanasoula, who each show how lighting and live camera feeds can be instrumental in directing the attention of an audience in different ways.
Marco Miglioli: Things change according to how they are illuminated
Founder of Marco Miglioli ArchiLight Studio, Marco Miglioli is an architect and lighting designer with over 15 years of experience and several international awards to his name. Initially trained in theatre, Miglioli places the relationship between light and built space at the centre of his interest, and constantly blends his passion for theatre, art and architecture.
Using images of three of his recent projects, including the spectacular relight of Milan Cathedral, he showed how lighting in architecture transcends the mere function of illuminating spaces, changing and guiding visitors through their journey, and creating different scenes that evoke emotions and memory in a similar way to theatre.
Miglioli is currently involved in a number of exhibitions and unique projects that combine theatre and architecture, as well as continuing his work on phosphorescent lighting.
Christina Thanasoula: Stage lighting design and live feed cameras on the 21st century theatre stage.
Alumnus of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and currently working on her PhD thesis at UOA, Christine Thanasoula has designed lighting for over 250 opera, theatre and dance performances. Her Showlight 2025 presentation focused on the 21st century’s new ‘zooming mechanism’, the camera, and examined how the dramaturgy of light is affected by live feed cameras as it draws the viewer’s focus to particular areas or actions on stage.
Thanasoula is currently lighting a number of international productions, including 'Lysistrata' at the open air theatre of Ancient Messini, Greece, 'City Lights', based on the original Charlie Chaplin movie, in Uppsala Theatre, Sweden, Sophie Swithinbank's multi-award winning play 'Bacon' in Athens’ Theatre Anesis, and 'Gloria', which opens at Theatre Xorn in Athens in October 2026. Thanasoula is also a member of the mentoring team of the Greek National Opera workshop on Musical Theatre, which will run from September 2026 to July 2027.
